Types
of Rock Music
Arena
Rock - Also known as stadium rock, arena rock is where the commercialization
of rock music had reached its height by filling stadiums with thousands of rock
fans. The bands include Heart, Bon Jovi, KISS, Boston, Styx, Foreigner, Journey
and Aerosmith.
Christian
Rock - Sometimes called Jesus Music, Christian rock Started in the United
States in the 1960's. Some names include Phil Keaggy and Bruce Cockburn.
Folk
Rock - Started in the 1960's in the United States. Some of the groups and
individuals were the Kingston Trio, The Mamas & the Papas, Bob Dylan and Cat
Stevens
Funk
Rock - Started in the 1960's, some of the bands and performers include Prince.
Earth, Wind & Fire, Kool & the Gang, Sly and the Family Stone, Curtis
Mayfield, Tower of Power, Average White Band, and the famous James Brown.
Glam
Rock - Born in the UK in the 1960's, Glam Rock or Glitter Rock got its name
from the flamboyant clothes, make-up and hairstyles that the bands and singers
wore during their performances. Bands and individuals include David Bowie, Alice
Cooper and Kiss.
Garage
Rock - Garage rock started in North America in the 1960's. Some of the more
popular groups are the Kingsmen of Portland, Oregon and Paul Revere and the Raiders
of Boise, Idaho.
Grunge
- Developed in 1980's in the Seattle, Washington area. Groups include of Nirvana
and Pearl Jam
Hard
Rock - Began in the 1960's some of the bands include as Cream, The Rolling
Stones, The Yardbirds and The Who.
Heavy
Metal - Stated in the late 1960's and early 70's in the US and UK. Some of
the bands include Metallica, Iron Butterfly, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath.
New
Wave - Originated in the 1970's some of the groups include Duran Duran, Eurythmics,
The Cars and the Go-Go's.
Progressive
Rock - Started in the UK and the US in the 1960's and 70's. Bands include
the Beatles and The Moody Blues,
Psychedelic
Rock - Influence of the drug scene with songs some of the bands and performers
are Country Joe and the Fish, The Doors, Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix and Jefferson
Airplane.
Punk
Rock - Started in Australia, United States and the United Kingdom in the mid
1970's. Groups include Sex Pistols, Ramones and The Clash.
Soft
Rock - Emerged in the 1970's some of the groups and individuals include Fleetwood
Mac, Billy Joel and Elton John.
Surf
Music - Popular in southern California with the surf crowd, the groups include
The Beach Boys and The Surfaris.
